Acceptable Use Policy for FBC/T Students
Club Pebble Beach
September 6, 2000. Last updated: June 17, 2005
It is a goal that everyone at CPB, including roommates, their guests, as well as students who are here as my guests, should feel welcome and comfortable here. To that end, this document articulates a few guidelines that establish acceptable use of the resources at CPB, particularly in relation to media.
- Romans 14:13
- Therefore let us not judge one another anymore, but rather determine this not to put an obstacle or a stumbling block in a brother’s way.
Below are some standards outlining appropriate use here at CPB, as well as list some specific examples of media that I believe is not appropriate here. Should you choose to do any of these things listed below, you should not plan on doing so at my house. Understand, I am not saying (or even implying) you are wrong to do any of these things on your own time. That is, of course, between you and God.
Occasionally there may be an exception to these guidelines, but in those cases, it must be discussed and worked out ahead of time, and most likely will require parental permission. I do not expect to enumerate every possible instance, but rather to state some general expectations. Do not interpret any examples as an exhaustive list. Please, if you believe that I am in error in establishing any of these guidelines, talk to me.
Movies – Nothing above PG-13.
As has been previously established, any movies must be PG-13 or better (or have specific parental permission). When movies are rated ‘R,’ there most likely is a reason. However, just as there may be exceptions with ‘R’ movies, a PG-13 rating doesn’t mean it is automatically okay either. Fortunately, not only are there many movies out there, there is no requirement that we watch every single one.
Music – Only from professing Christian groups.
Again, as has been previously established, all music should be from a professing Christian group, or other group specifically approved (e.g. “Weird-Al”). This includes MP3s and music videos whether from MTV, videotape, Internet, etc.
Cable – Just because its on TV doesn’t make it okay.
Cable TV offers many programming choices at any moment, most of which would not cause anyone to stumble. However, if you plan on watching shows like “South Park” or “Saturday Night Live,” please plan on watching it somewhere else.
Computer Games – Nothing above “T”een (unless using reduced violence/gore settings).
There are many computer games available for network play. Most of which are relatively tame, however, some are excessively violent or even demonic in appearance. Choose to play other games.
Internet Usage – No inappropriate content.
My Internet firewall blocks a lot of sites that don’t need to be accessed from my house, but it is not exhaustive. Further, some may say that “inappropriate” varies from person to person. If you are not sure, talk to me about what you want to do first! Know that all Internet activity originating from my house is logged, and I do scan the logs. If you do end up someplace you know you shouldn’t, Close It! Then, let me know so I don’t find an unpleasant surprise in the logs. On those few instances where I’ve been disappointed, I did follow up. And I will continue to do so.
